Holidays to Burma

****14-August-2010. News Just Broken. It has been announced that Myanmar (Burma) will hold its first Elections in 2 decades on 7th November 2010.****

With an increasing number of articles appearing in the Popular Press recently about travel to Burma, and the delights of visiting this fascinating destination, we are pleased that holidays to this often overlooked country are very slowly becoming more popular.

Shellseekers is not a political organisation, and we respect the views of those who think isolationism is the route to democracy. However, we do question whether the ordinary people of Burma will benefit from being forgotten.

Our reason for suggesting Burma as a holiday destination is so that you see the heart of the country – the people who you will meet every day on your travels.  The culture and beauty of the country are unique, and spending time getting to know both is more a life experience than a "holiday". Our professional colleagues in Burma will take care of all the details of your visit and will do everything to ensure that your time in this beautiful country will be something which stays in your memory for years to come.

Burma is a country with a fascinating history, wonderful temples and charming people.  Visiting Burma will be an experience we hope you will never forget – for all the very best reasons. You will have the distinct feeling of stepping back in time, and please do not expect Burma to offer all the modern facilities associated with resorts in other Asian countries.

The temples and culture of Burma are well known, but what is less well known is that there are also lovely beaches with hotels which are terrific value for money.  Please take a moment to browse through our pictures and suggested itineraries – then be tempted to see a country which is really very special.

There are those who do not encourage visits to Burma, and they are entitled to their views. However, Shellseekers is not a political organisation, and while we respect the views of those who think isolationism is the route to democracy, we do question whether the ordinary people of Burma will benefit from being cut off from the rest of the world and effectively forgotten.

May 2008 - Cyclone Nargis Relief Effort. Since the cyclone struck Myanmar (Burma) it has been of increasing concern that aid is not getting through to those most in need. Please see below a way that medical and practical relief can be provided direct to those in desperate need of both. We fully support the organisations and their efforts to reach directly the most vulnerable areas - all donations will be put to immediate use helping on the ground in Burma. Although it is some months since the cyclone struck, relief is still desperately needed. Please see below details of how to donate toward cyclone relief in Burma.

Cyclone Nargis Relief Effort in Myanmar (Burma)

Since Cyclone Nargis struck Burma, it has been of increasing concern that aid is not getting to those who most need help.

Our travel partners with whom we work promoting holidays to Burma (EPG Travel) have the opportunity to work together with the international aid organization Johanniter.org (www.johanniter-allgaeu.de ) of Germany, in providing help to victims of cyclone Nargis.

On 13 May, EPG assisted Johanniter with one delivery of medical supplies to Laputta and now are planning a larger delivery to the small town of Kyaiklat, which is located about 65 kilometers southwest of Yangon in the Delta.  EPG Travel staff will deliver the supplies directly to the Doctors, medical staff and volunteers working with the local Catholic aid organization named ‘Empathy’ which is now in Kyaiklat.  ‘Empathy’ will help organizing and managing distribution once the supplies are delivered.

Johanniter specializes in providing medical needs around the world to disaster victims and will be donating:

Medicine for diarrhea, antibiotics, Sterile wound dressings, Rehydration powder, Intravenous fluids and IV sets, Antiseptic lotion, & related miscellaneous medical items

If you would like to donate to Johanniter for their medical aid mission in Myanmar please contact them (see www.johanniter-allgaeu.de ) and please inform them when you donate that you wish the donation to go to the Myanmar aid project.
