Botswana is famous as one of the best game viewing countries in the world.  Many will automatically think of the Okavango Delta, but this is only a small part of Botswana.  Much of Botswana is stark and dry but is home to a profusion of wildlife. 

The Chobe National Park includes Savute (lion country), or the Tuli area is home to large herds of elephant – plus there is always the endless Kalahari just waiting to captivate you with its stark magic. 

 

Safaris can be traditional-style in vehicles, or on horseback.  Exploring the Delta in mokoros (traditional dug-out canoes) gives you the opportunity to move soundlessly through the water, watching nature unfold all around.  Of course, the main attraction is the animals – but the birds and plant species deserve a safari of their own.  So much to see and experience.

 

The Okavango Delta lies in the North West of Botswana and is the largest inland Delta in the world.  The flood, or green, season in the Delta traditionally starts in March – with the waters rising from the Angolan border in the North moving slowly Southwards, finally reaching Maun in August.  Of course, traditional weather patterns can be unpredictable – just like Africa itself which is always unpredictable! 

 

Not only does Botswana have the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari Desert, it also has salt pans in the East.
